Your Complete Moving Checklist
A week-by-week guide to coordinate with your packers and movers — from booking to settling into your new home.
How to use this checklist: Your movers handle packing, loading, transport and unloading. Your job is to plan, coordinate, and supervise. Each phase below focuses on what you need to do — not what the mover does. Tick each item as you complete it.

4 Weeks BeforePlan and Book
- Finalise your moving date — weekends and month-end are peak and cost more. Mid-week moves are usually cheaper.
- Get quotes from at least 3 verified movers on Puniyo — compare pricing, inclusions and reviews before deciding.
- Declutter before you move — sell, donate or discard items you no longer need. Less inventory means lower cost.
- Measure your new home — check door widths, lift size and staircase access. Share these details with your mover.
- Confirm the packing service — ask whether packing material, cartons and bubble wrap are included or charged separately.
- Start a moving file — collect all quotes, agreements, receipts and inventory lists in one folder.
2-3 Weeks BeforePrepare Inventory and Documents
- Create a room-wise inventory list — note all major items. Share it with your mover for accurate quotes and loading plan.
- Flag fragile items to your mover — glassware, art, antiques, mirrors, TV, electronics. These need special handling.
- Ask about transit insurance — what's covered, what isn't, and how claims work. Add high-value items to the list.
- Set aside essentials — documents, jewellery, medicines, phone chargers, toiletries in a bag that travels with you.
- Back up digital data — photos, videos, work files. Keep the external hard drive with you, not in the truck.
- Notify utilities — electricity, water, gas, internet, DTH. Schedule disconnection at the old place and connection at the new one.
1 Week BeforeFinal Preparations
- Reconfirm timing with your mover — arrival time, vehicle type, crew size and inventory list. Get it in writing.
- Empty and defrost the refrigerator — 24 hours before moving day. This is the customer's task, not the mover's.
- Keep documents ready — Aadhaar, PAN, bank papers, property documents. These travel with you, not in the moving truck.
- Return borrowed items — books, tools, dishes from neighbours and friends.
- Cancel or forward subscriptions — newspapers, milk delivery, magazine subscriptions.
- Photograph your home before packing — helps with insurance claims if any damage occurs in transit.
Moving DaySupervise and Sign Off
- Do a final walkthrough — check all rooms, kitchen, balcony, bathroom and storeroom before the movers leave.
- Verify the inventory list — check every item against the loaded inventory before signing off.
- Keep essentials with you — first night box, documents, jewellery, laptop, phone and medicines.
- Note the transporter's contact — share the driver's number with family before the truck departs.
- Photograph the loaded truck — helps with insurance claims if damage occurs during transit.
- Pay as agreed — usually a percentage upfront and the balance after delivery. Never pay everything in advance.
After the MoveSettle In Smoothly
- Inspect all goods while unloading — note any damage in writing before signing the delivery receipt.
- Unpack essentials first — kitchen, toiletries, bedding and a change of clothes for the first night.
- Update your address — bank, Aadhaar, PAN, insurance, employer, credit cards, deliveries and subscriptions.
- Transfer your vehicle RC — if you've moved states, update your vehicle registration at the new RTO within 30 days.
- Register at the new RTO — for driver's licence update and vehicle transfer.
- Meet neighbours and local services — plumber, electrician, grocery store, chemist and doctor.
